Story

Cycling in Australia is nothing like cycling in The Netherlands. It’s better, but it’s also far worse. It’s better because, well, look at the scenery and the weather! But in terms of suitable infrastructure and especially the general attitude towards cyclists, a lot can be improved.

The good thing is that, despite of the lack of bike paths and the risk of being ‘doored’, being shouted at, given the finger, having coke bottles thrown at you, (almost) being run off the road and endlessly replacing tubes because of strategically placed tacks along popular cycling routes, riding bikes is becoming more and more popular.

Because of this, cycling is no longer ignored and I’m glad to see things are improving.

However, we still have a long way to go. And that’s why we need organisations like the Amy Gillett Foundation, a national organisation with a mission to reduce the incidents of serious injury and death of bike riders, through recommending on public policy, legislation and resource allocation decisions.

Each year, the foundation organises Amy’s Gran Fondo, a 120km timed event in which thousands of riders ride along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

I’m participating in this event in September and am going to try to collect a few dollars to put towards making riding in Australia safer.

My aim is to collect $500 and I would like to ask you to help me achieve this by donating a few dollars and/or sharing this page with anyone who you believe might be interested. Just think of it like this: if you ride a bike, you benefit from it.

I promise, it’s a one-off request…

Thanks in advance!

Amy Gillett Foundation

The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
