Aiming for 2nd Last

Story

I ride a bike. I don't ride fast but I do it without training wheels and it's an excuse to wear Lycra and it's one of the few legitimate excuses a man of my age can use to wear lycra in public that is socially acceptable.

I am meant to write on this page that "I am passionate about helping the Amy Gillett Foundation create a safer environment for all bicycle riders and help improve traffic flow for all road users.  Did you know that 48 people were killed in 2013 and  9,307 bike riders were seriously injured in Australia?"

This is a worthy cause but my main motivation for raising funds is to gain access to the VIP marquee on the day of the ride as I'm guessing they will have massuers and/or physios and I'm tipping that in my current shape I'll be in dire need of both should I make it to the finish line. It will also be really satisfying to look out from the VIP marquee and gaze at everybody not in the VIP marquee with an air of superiority despite the fact they most likely completed the ride hours ahead of me and didn't require an IV drip post-ride like myself.

Essentially, I have 3 main goals:

1. Gain access to the VIP Marquee

2. Finish the ride

3. Come second last or better.

My inspiration for this race is Belgian cyclist Kenneth Vanbilsen who finsihed 3rd last in the 2015 Tour De France. He spent 89 hours on the bike over the course of the TDF and there is every chance I'll spend a similiar amount of time peddling the loop that starts and finishes in Lorne.

Amy Gillett Foundation

The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
